THE BASICS

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once the bone has fused to it, the implant carries a crown, a bridge or a full arch of teeth. Unlike a denture, it is fixed, it keeps the jawbone from shrinking and it does not rely on grinding down healthy neighbouring teeth.

STEP BY STEP

The Implant Procedure

1. Consultation & CT scan

The dentist checks bone volume, gum health and takes a 3D scan to plan implant positions.

2. Extractions & bone grafting

Any failing teeth are removed. If bone is thin, a graft or sinus lift is added first.

3. Implant placement

The titanium post is placed into the jaw under local anaesthetic. Usually 30–60 minutes per implant.

4. Osseointegration

The bone fuses to the implant over 3–6 months. A temporary tooth is worn in the meantime.

5. Abutment & crown

The connector and the final crown, bridge or arch are fitted and the bite is adjusted.
